Dr. Tharaikattu ( Abe) Abraham was born in India in 1945 and obtained his basic medical degree (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery - M.B.B.S) from one of the most prestigious medical schools in India, The Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research ( JIPMER) in 1966 graduating with distinction. In 1968 he moved to Chicago, Illinois and completed a straight Surgical Internship at the St. Francis Hospital (Northwestern University) with the distinction as the most outstanding intern of the hospital system. He immigrated to Canada in 1969 and joined the Surgical residency program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. He obtained his F.R.C.S.(C) in December of 1973 and continued to work at the University of Alberta as Teaching fellow with the main responsibilities of teaching medical students, interns and residents at that institution.
He had a very successful surgery practice in Prince George , British Columbia from 1976 t0 1995 where he served the hospital and the community as Chief of Surgery and as the President of the Cancer Clinic Society. In 1995 he moved his practice to Winfield, Alabama, in the United States. He practiced General surgery in Alabama for the next 11 years. In 2006 he moved back to Canada to Oakville, Ontario and have been associated with the PES/Rudd clinic in Oakville and in Toronto doing colonoscopies and upper endoscopies exclusively.
He has served the National Canadian medical community in various capacities as Regional Advisory Committee member, and as a member of the task force on communications of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He was also honored to be appointed as an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada F.R.C.S examinations. While in the United States he was admitted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S). In addition to the honorary degree he also obtained the Certification or the Diploma of the American Board of Surgery in 2000.
He was involved in doing Colonoscopies and Gastroscopies from the year 1973 and has close to 35 years of experience in these procedures. Although not an accurate count, he estimates the he has done more than 25,000 colonoscopies and is well versed in all aspects of this procedure.
