Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic Touch (TT) is a healing technique based on assessing and balancing the bioenergetic field around the body using the hands. Practitioners seek to correct and restore balance by assessing the client's energy field, clearing it, and transferring their energy to the client.
Therapeutic Touch was developed by Dolores Krieger, Ph.D., R.N., and Dora Kunz, a spiritual healer as a contemporary interpretation of ancient healing arts, such as the laying on of hands. It draws upon the ancient Indian belief in prana, the vital energy force that surrounds the body and circulates through 7 chakras. Dr. Krieger, a trained academic and professor at NYU's School of Nursing, and others were interested in subjecting therapeutic touch to rigorous scientific research. Different studies have been conducted to demonstrate that TT induces a relaxation response, alleviates pain, and speeds the healing process.
Asian practitioners suggested more than 2,000 years ago that the flow and balance of life energies are necessary for maintaining health. Today, Therapeutic Touch is used by health professionals, holistic practitioners, therapists, counsellors, clergy, educators and private individuals in hospitals, hospices and palliative care units. Therapeutic Touch is taught and practiced globally, including numerous universities and colleges in Canada. It is accepted in the policies and procedures of an increasing number of health care institutions world wide and as a intervention in a number of Ontario hospitals.
Therapeutic Touch promotes relaxation and reduction of anxiety, helps to change client's perception of pain and facilitates the body's natural restorative processes.
