At GreeneStone, there will be readings that will be recommended by health care professionals throughout the program stay.

As much as individuals see themselves alone in this disease, it is noted that in any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health or addiction problem, Smetanin et al., wrote in the life and economic impact of major mental illnesses in Canada:2011.

Struggling with a substance use disorder along with concurrent issues can be associated with distress and impaired functioning.

In Ontario alone, the annual cost of just alcohol-related health care, law enforcement, corrections, lost productivity, and other problems is estimated to be at least $5 billion according to Rehm et al, 2006.

Often those who suffer from this disease of addiction minimize their use of substances, consequences of their use, impacts on their relationships, their physical and psychological well-being, and their job performance. It is not surprising that often individuals who actually come to treatment share that they have not disclosed their substance use history with their circle of health care providers.

We encourage individuals and family members and loved ones to empower themselves with the vast amount of learning that is available for those struggling with substance use disorders and for those who are impacted.

GreeneStone also suggests the bookstore by Hazelden Publishing that provides a vast amount of material specific to those struggling with alcohol or drugs and other concurrent issues (depression, anxiety, ptsd, etc).
